Veterinary pathology with a focus on small animal, marine mammal and wildlife species

Description of Current Research and/or Professional Activities:

Dr. Fleetwood received her veterinary degree from Kansas State University in 1999, followed by a residency in veterinary pathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology.  Her residency training included rotations at the Smithsonian National Zoo and the Foreign Animal Diagnosticians Course at Plum Island.  She was certified a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists in 2002.  From 2002-2010 she was on staff at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology where she focused primarily on small animal surgical pathology, marine mammal pathology, training veterinary pathology residents and visiting veterinary students, and volunteering at the National Zoo.  She investigated marine mammal strandings as a member of the Joint Working Group on Unusual Marine Mammal Mortality Events from 2005 to 2009.  She braved the Alaskan cold in 2005 and 2006 to be a veterinarian for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
